Ickybana Offering
Artist: Randy Wray

Element Editions is pleased to present our inaugural print, Ickybana Offering, by the artist Randy Wray. The title of the work refers to the ritual flower offerings made in sixth century Buddhist temples that later became known as ikebana. The print's central image is suggestive of a floral arrangement (vegetable), rooster (animal), or rock formation (mineral) depending on the viewer's mental inclinations.

Known for his work in both two and three dimensions, Wray chose to utilize multiple processes (sculpting, painting, photography, digital manipulation, and drawing) in creating his image. He began by constructing several sculptures from shredded paper, polystyrene, seashells, and epoxy clay to which he then applied paint and glass glitter. After photographing the forms, he digitally manipulated the pictures combining elements from each work into one cohesive image. This became the foundation for the print and was produced as a color offset lithograph. Next, using a computer, the artist made drawings based on details of the sculptures as well as plants, spider webs, the human tongue, and abstract patterns. These drawings were transferred to silk screens giving the artist a variety of graphic elements from which to choose when printing. Wray hand screened three to six images in various combinations and colors on each version of the print and applied glitter to selected areas. The works were completed with multiple hand additions in colored pencil and ink making each print unique.

Randy Wray's work has appeared in numerous exhibitions both in New York and abroad.
