We are a Brooklyn-based, artist run, fine art publishing studio that works with invited artists on experimental approaches to printmaking. Each work from our small numbered editions is unique and shows evidence of the artist's hand. We aim to make original art accessible to more people.
Element's prints are in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Weatherspoon Art Museum.

Artist: Andrew Piedilato
Artist statement: First, I am a painter, not a printmaker. Most people think that a painter should approach printmaking the same way they approach painting. For example, I paint very aggressively, sometimes very thick, often rendering forms quickly.... so it's often suggested that I try monotypes (fast painterly prints lacking the ability to be editioned like lithographs or woodcuts). But, on the contrary I chose intaglio. No aqua tints, no acids, just carving with a wood screw and sandpaper. This printmaking process is closer to my painting process in terms of how I arrive at images. I paint with the lights off, throw sticks dipped in paint at the canvas, work over the "good parts" when I am stuck. With this print the first thing I did was go outside and toss the plate in the street. The spinning scuffmarks gave me a nice little curve that looked like a hill shape. I developed that shape into a hill made of wooden planks, which was a nice setting for a little monster guy doing something weird. That turned into the monster guy being near a chimney billowing smoke. The final image is not supposed to be anything more than a strange little scene.
